The Bempton Cliffs Shorewatch initiative, a remarkable project by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) charity, has achieved a significant milestone in its mission to protect marine life. Since its inception 16 months ago, this innovative program has attracted over 2,200 dolphin sightings and approximately 50 whale sightings, a testament to the dedication of its 20 volunteers. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the fact that these volunteers, armed with specialized marine binoculars, have conducted over 1,000 observations from the clifftop at the internationally renowned RSPB site. Personally, I find this project particularly fascinating because it showcases the power of citizen science in conservation efforts. By engaging the public in data collection, the WDC is not only increasing awareness about marine wildlife but also gathering valuable long-term data that can inform conservation strategies. What makes this project even more impressive is the variety of marine life it has recorded. The team has logged 1,896 bottlenose dolphins, 341 harbour porpoises, 50 minke whales, and a humpback whale. This diversity highlights the richness of marine life in East Yorkshire's waters and the importance of protecting these habitats. However, the project's impact extends beyond the numbers. By collecting long-term data on the mammals using these waters, we can better understand how environmental changes are affecting them and ensure conservation decisions are based on robust evidence.
